During my tenure as content producer and education coordinator for Smithsonian Folkways, I experienced firsthand the Smithsonian’s vast music-related assets and the challenges of communicating them to its constituency. As the founder and inaugural managing editor of Smithsonian Folkways Magazine, I strove to produce and solicit content that would fall in the sweet spot between academic rigor and accessibility for a general audience. The Ralph Rinzler archives proved a goldmine of intensely relevant yet underutilized assets to showcase CFCH resources. As founder and managing editor, I produced ten issues of Folkways Magazine in two and a half years featuring music from all over the world, solicited articles from ethnomusicologists and world music educators, edited and integrated video, and managed credits and permissions of copyrighted materials.
